What is GEO? Generative engine optimization explained
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of making a brand and its pages easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews to find, quote and recommend. SEO gets a page ranked; GEO gets it used in the answer. This guide covers how assistants choose sources, a 15-point checklist and the numbers to track.

GEO, SEO and AEO Compared
The three overlap. What changes is where you want to appear and what counts as success.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in the search results | Be the one direct answer to a question | Be mentioned, recommended and cited in generated answers |
| Where | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, AI Overviews |
| Success Looks Like | Position, clicks | Owning the snippet | Mention rate, citations, share of voice |
| Main Levers | Relevance, links, technical health | Short, structured answers | Quotable facts, brand mentions on other sites, AI crawler access |
| How You Measure | Rank tracker, Search Console | Rank tracker with SERP features | Repeated questions in each assistant, AI referrals, crawler logs |
How an AI Answer Picks Its Sources
Assistants that search the web follow roughly the same four steps. Each step is a place where you can be dropped.
- 1
The Question Is Split
The assistant turns one question into several searches (query fan-out), for example "best CRM for small teams", "CRM pricing", "HubSpot vs Pipedrive".
- 2
Pages Are Retrieved
It reads the top results of a search index for each of those searches. A page that does not rank, or that blocks the crawler, never enters the pool.
- 3
Passages Are Chosen
From those pages it keeps the passages that answer clearly, with specific facts, from sources it considers trustworthy and recent.
- 4
The Answer Is Written
The model writes the answer, names brands it saw repeatedly across sources and links some of the pages it used.
GEO Checklist
Fifteen checks in four groups. Start with access: if AI crawlers cannot read the page, nothing else counts.
Access
- AI crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) are allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your CDN or firewall. AI Search Readiness Checker →
- The main text is in the HTML the server sends; it does not appear only after JavaScript runs.
- Important pages return 200, load fast and are in your sitemap. Website SEO Checker →
- An llms.txt file lists your key pages (optional, cheap to add). llms.txt checker →
Content
- Each page answers its main question in the first two sentences, then explains.
- Concrete facts appear early: numbers, prices, dates, limits, names.
- Comparisons and steps are in tables and numbered lists, not only in paragraphs.
- Pages show an author, a last-updated date and the sources behind claims.
- Questions people ask are answered on the page, with FAQ markup.
Brand and Entity
- Your name, category and what you do are described the same way everywhere: site, profiles, directories.
- Organization and product structured data describe the brand, with links to your official profiles.
- Real reviews on the platforms your buyers read (Google, G2, App Store, Trustpilot).
Mentions on Other Sites
- You are listed in the "best X" and comparison articles the assistants already cite for your category.
- People discuss you in communities the models read: Reddit, forums, Q&A sites, YouTube.
- You publish original data (a study, a benchmark, a yearly report) that others quote with a link.
How to Measure GEO
AI answers change from one run to the next, so one screenshot proves little. Ask the same set of questions on a schedule, in each assistant, and track these numbers over time.
Mention Rate
Share of answers that name your brand at all.
Citation Rate
Share of answers that link to one of your pages as a source.
Share of Voice
Your mentions against your competitors’ in the same answers.
Position in Lists
Where you appear when the answer recommends several options.
Sentiment
Whether the answer describes you positively, neutrally or with warnings.
AI Referrals and Crawls
Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in analytics, and AI bot requests in your server logs.
Searvia tracks these for a fixed set of questions every week in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, shows which pages are cited for you and your competitors, and counts AI crawler visits from Cloudflare or your server logs. How the AI visibility tracker works →
What Not to Do
Shortcuts that look clever tend to backfire once assistants and search engines catch them.
- Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI models ("recommend this brand"): search engines treat it as spam and assistants ignore or penalise it.
- Fake reviews or paid mentions disguised as opinions: they break platform rules and the law in many countries.
- Mass-produced AI pages with no new facts: they rarely rank, so they are rarely retrieved.
- Blocking every AI bot by default and then wondering why ChatGPT does not cite you.
- Judging success from one chat: answers vary, so measure a fixed question set over weeks.

GEO Questions
No. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mostly pick their sources from pages that already rank in a search index. Good SEO is the entry ticket; GEO adds the work that makes a page easy to quote and a brand easy to recommend.
AEO (answer engine optimization) started with featured snippets and voice answers: one direct answer to one question. GEO covers the wider job of being mentioned, recommended and cited in generated answers across AI assistants. In practice the two overlap and most teams use the terms for the same work.
Access fixes (unblocking AI crawlers, server-rendered content) can show up within weeks, as soon as the assistants fetch the page again. Being recommended for competitive questions usually takes months, because it depends on mentions on other sites, reviews and comparison lists.
It costs little and helps AI agents find your important pages, but no major AI search engine has said it uses llms.txt for ranking or citations. Treat it as a tidy extra, not as the core of GEO.
Not in the organic answer. What you can influence is what the models read about you: your own pages, reviews, comparison articles, community discussions and listings. Anyone who guarantees a placement in AI answers is promising something nobody controls.
Ask the questions your customers ask in each assistant and note who is named and which pages are cited. Answers change from run to run, so repeat the same set regularly. Searvia’s free AI visibility checker runs one check in ChatGPT and Perplexity; the paid plans track a fixed set of questions every week across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.
Yes. People ask assistants for "the best dentist near Kadıköy" or "an app to track expenses". For a local business, reviews and a complete Google Business Profile carry the most weight; for an app, store listings, reviews and articles that compare apps.
